I had seen the reviews from people saying it was just terrible and that its a cross between soft core porn and domestic abuse. There are so many people out there that make small things into big deals and over exaggerate so I really didn't think it'd be that bad. Neither of us had read the books and were quite curious as to what the movie was going to be like (we had heard rumours and seen the trailer so we were kind of clued in).
***SPOILERS ALERT***
The first half of it was just, incredible cringe moments with an excessive amount of lip biting. I couldn't help but draw comparisons to Twilight where Edward was telling Bella to stay away. Christian Grey, our main male character, was literally standing on the street, holding Anastasia and telling her to stay away from him. Did they just copy that scene, or was the writer a huge Twilight fan? This is among many of the moments we both just look at each other and facepalmed.
After a while things had gotten to the point where I was watching and all I could see was an obsessive, controlling stalker preying on a sheltered and curious girl (though she was all kinds of fucked up as well). Things progressed and I honestly wanted to get up there on the screen and shake Anastasia out of it. Not letting her see her parents or drink or talk with her bestie about stuff. Get real mate.
Anyway. As we neared the end, things really did turn into some kind of fucked up domestic abuse shit. Honestly. Both of us sat there going "WTF is this shit". Walking out after the movie trying to make sense of what we had just seen, we couldn't rationlise it on any level.
Overall, 100% wouldn't see again. The acting alone was sub-par and the story line was terrible. If there is a second movie coming out, I truly hope things get a bit better than what ever the hell just happened.
